Why a deck

Your home extended into the open air

A good deck is not just boards on the ground. It is where morning coffee, summer evenings and guests find their place — for decades.

Every deck is different: clay soil, snow load, sun orientation and neighbours. We do not build from a template. We visit, measure and discuss how the deck works best on your plot — only then do we fix the structure and price.

  • Frame with air gap50 mm air gap under the boards keeps timber dry and prevents rot.
  • Hidden fixingsA clean board surface without visible screws — and protection from frost heave.
  • Your material choiceImpregnated pine, larch, thermowood or composite — we choose together based on use and budget.

Why Puuseppmeister

Three things we do differently from a cheaper contractor

A cheap deck and a long-lasting deck differ in what lies beneath the boards and stays invisible.

Frame with air gap

Load-bearing joists 48×150 mm C24 pine at 400–600 mm centres and min 50 mm air gap under the boards. This prevents blue stain rot — the most common deck failure in Estonia's damp climate.

Hidden fixings

Hidden screw-slot system keeps screws under the boards: a clean, even surface without visible screw heads and protection from rain, snow and frost heave.

Written 3-year warranty

The warranty covers all workmanship, structure, fixings and possible settlement — in writing in the contract. You are not left alone if something needs a later review.

Material choice

Which decking board for your deck?

Material sets the price per square metre, maintenance needs and the feel underfoot. Below is an honest comparison — and more detail in our guide which decking board to choose.

Best value

Impregnated pine

Affordable, durable classic in green or brown tones. Best price-to-durability ratio if you are willing to oil the wood every couple of years.

Best for: budget-conscious buyers who value natural timber and do not mind maintenance

*Service life assumes a frame with air gap and regular maintenance. Without an air gap, every material's lifespan shortens significantly.

How we build

Deck construction in six steps

We build step by step — each stage requires the previous one to be ready. That prevents sagging and gaps.

1

Planning and measuring

We visit, measure and discuss how you will use the deck. Will it host a grill corner, wrap a pool or carry winter snow load? That determines the whole structure.

2

Base preparation

We remove the organic layer, install geotextile and a 100–150 mm crushed-stone drainage layer. Clay Harjumaa soil subsides during frost heave if the base is not properly compacted.

3

Foundation construction

Concrete blocks or adjustable timber posts (min 150 mm above ground). Each support is levelled with a laser so the surface is perfectly level.

4

Frame construction

Frame 48×150 mm deep-impregnated C24 pine, joists at 400–600 mm centres. Load capacity allows for snow load (up to 200 kg/m²).

5

Deck board installation

Hidden screw fixing, 5–8 mm expansion gaps and two rows of fixings. We plane edges evenly for a finished result.

6

Finishing and handover

Railings, steps and handrails. If needed, we oil the timber before winter so autumn moisture does not penetrate the layers. Finally, we walk through the deck with you.

Technical requirements

Construction standards for the Estonian climate

In Harjumaa's climate (annual precipitation over 600 mm, snow from November to March), a deck must withstand moisture, freezing and UV exposure. These are the requirements we follow on every project from Jüri to Viimsi.

  • Load-bearing timber in contact with ground — use class 4 (EN 351-1)
  • Level frame, supports aligned with a laser
  • Drainage and geotextile against frost heave

Most common mistake

A cheap deck is often built without an air gap directly on the ground. Without ventilation, rot often reaches the timber within 5–8 years. Our 50 mm air gap and proper drainage extend service life to 20–30 years.

Joist spacing and ventilation

We install load-bearing joists (48×150 mm vacuum-impregnated C24 pine) at 400–600 mm centres: 400 mm for 28 mm boards and 600 mm for 32 mm boards. We leave at least 50 mm air gap under the boards to prevent blue stain rot (serpula lacrymans).

Timber treatment (EN 351-1)

Timber in contact with the ground must be use class 4 treated (EN 351-1). Without the correct class, rot often reaches timber within 5–8 years in Harjumaa's damp climate.

Building notice and height requirements

A deck up to 0.5 m above ground usually does not require a building notice. A higher deck (e.g. 1.0 m) or a roofed deck may require a building notice in Tallinn and Harjumaa municipalities. We help with paperwork if needed.

Snow load and load capacity

Frame load capacity allows for Estonian snow load up to 200 kg/m². For larger spans and roofed decks we reinforce the frame and tighten joist spacing.

Railings and handrail

A deck higher than 0.5 m needs a handrail (min 0.9 m). We build railings to deck height and local requirements and connect them to steps as one whole where needed.

Deck railings and steps Railings and steps

Railings and handrail

A safe deck, a finished whole

A railing is not just a design feature — it is an important part of deck safety. Proper railings give confidence and a finished look.

We build railings to match deck height and use. A deck higher than 0.5 m needs a handrail (min 0.9 m). If needed, we connect railings to steps for a uniform, durable whole.

  • Timber railings and handrails to local authority requirements
  • Steps and railings as one uniform whole
  • Finished, impregnated or painted to your preference

Maintenance and repair

We look after your deck after completion too

Regular maintenance extends a deck's life by decades. If an older deck needs refreshing, we help restore it.

Cleaning, oiling and protective treatments plus advice on proper deck care. Read on the blog, how to oil a deck correctly.

Deck repair

We replace boards, reinforce the structure and restore appearance. Cleaning, sanding, painting and replacing parts.

Price and payment

What affects deck price

Deck cost depends mainly on size and material choice. Extras such as a roof, pergola, steps or railings also affect the final price. The calculator gives an initial guide; the exact price is confirmed after measurement.

  • Deck area (m²) and frame height
  • Board material (pine, larch, thermo, composite)
  • Railings, steps and handrail
  • Base preparation and drainage

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does deck construction cost?

Price depends on size, material and extras (railings, steps, roof). Use the price calculator above for an initial guide — exact price after free measurement.

Can a terrace be built in winter?

Yes — in suitable weather we build terraces in winter too. For example in December 2025 we built a multi-level timber deck. In hard frost and deeply frozen ground we reschedule; a mild winter works well for construction.

Does deck construction require a building notice in Tallinn?

A deck up to 0.5 m high usually does not require a building notice. A higher or roofed deck may require one in Tallinn and Harjumaa municipalities — we help with documents if needed.

What is the correct joist spacing for decks in Estonia?

400 mm for 28 mm boards and 600 mm for 32 mm boards. We maintain min 50 mm ventilation air under the boards to prevent rot.

How long does a properly built timber deck last?

With the right structure and maintenance, 20–30 years. Without ventilation, rot often reaches timber within 5–8 years.

Which decking board should you choose?

Impregnated pine is the most affordable; larch and thermowood offer longer life and richer tone; composite is nearly maintenance-free. See the comparison table above or read the material guide.

How to maintain a deck?

Clean and oil the deck every 1–2 years. We replace damaged boards if needed and restore hidden screw systems. Read the oiling guide.
