Every fence starts with looking at the ground. Clay soil shifts more during frost heave than sandy soil, so post depth, concreting and post spacing all depend on your specific plot. We don't build to a template — we come to the site, measure and advise, and only then set the material and price.

How we build
How a fence comes together — six steps
From the first consultation to a finished boundary fence. Each stage relies on the previous one being ready, so the posts stay straight and the fence doesn't sag.

Consultation and planning
We check the plot and local council requirements, post spacing and material choice. We advise on the building notice if the fence exceeds 2.0 m in height.

On-site measuring
We assess the ground, check the boundary lines with neighbours and set the post spacing (1.8–2.5 m) according to the soil.

A detailed quote after measuring — the exact price is confirmed once the project is specified.

Post installation and concreting
We dig the post holes and pour M300 concrete (40×40 cm pad). In clay soil we go 90–110 cm deep so frost heave won't shift the posts.

Pickets and gate
Fixing the pickets with galvanised fasteners, a pedestrian or sliding gate and automation if needed.

Final check and handover
We walk the fence through with you and provide a 3-year warranty on workmanship and materials.
Technique and requirements
Fence construction standards in Tallinn and Harjumaa
Ehitus- ja Puuseppmeister OÜ installs boundary fences in clay and sandy soil conditions. Every job starts with a site visit — we look at the ground and decide the post depth. Clay soil shifts more during frost heave than sandy soil.

The most common mistake
Posts are set too shallow or without concrete, straight into clay soil. Frost heave pushes them out of line within a couple of winters. Our 90–110 cm depth, concreting and drainage keep the fence straight for years.

Post depth and concreting
We don't automatically dig a metre deep for every post. The depth depends on the soil, fence height and load. In clay soil a post usually goes 90–110 cm deep, with gate and corner posts set deeper. In sandier soil 70–80 cm is often enough with a properly compacted base and drainage. Post spacing is usually 2.0–2.5 m; in clay soil we tighten it to 1.8–2.0 m.
Material: vacuum-impregnated timber
We use vacuum-impregnated timber (EN 351-1, use class 4) for pine or spruce posts and pickets — impregnated to a depth of 6–8 mm. This timber withstands wet winters and spring moisture loads for 15–25 years without rot, provided the drainage is in order.
Local council requirements and the building notice
A building permit is usually not required to build a boundary fence, but a building notice is needed if the fence exceeds 2.0 m in height (1.8 m in some council areas). A separate rule applies to the height of a fence bordering neighbours. We help check the local council requirements before building starts.
Gates and automation

We install sliding and swing gates and automate them when needed. A gate adds everyday convenience to the fence and completes the boundary as a single whole.
Gate and corner posts are concreted deeper because they carry a greater load. Locks, fasteners and finish must last as long as the structure itself.

The right material and regular maintenance extend the life of a boundary fence. If an old fence needs a refresh, we help put it right.
Material and impregnation
We choose impregnated or painted pine and spruce posts and pickets to suit the site and budget. Vacuum-impregnated timber withstands Estonian wet winters for 15–25 years.
Repair and maintenance
We renovate existing fences on clay soil, repair the structure and replace damaged parts. A painted wooden fence can last 10–15 years before its first major maintenance.
