When you plan a new terrace, you quickly face the question: which board should you choose? One option that has become more common on Estonian sites is heat-oiled decking — often on an impregnated or thermally modified base, factory-treated with hot oil in an autoclave. Below we explain what it is, why it suits our climate, and what to check before you buy.

Heat-oiling does not replace a solid subframe. The board gives colour, UV protection and deeper oil protection; the frame, joist tape, ventilation and fasteners decide how long the deck stays straight.
What is heat-oiled decking?
Heat-oiling (hot oil) is a factory process: natural oil (often linseed-based) is heated and forced into the wood pores under vacuum/autoclave conditions. All sides of the board get a deeper oil layer than brush-on oiling alone. Suppliers describe water-repellent behaviour, better UV resistance and a ready colour before installation — so the terrace can be used right after fitting.
Wording matters: thermo wood means thermal modification (heat without oil, for dimensional stability). Heat-oiled board means an oil treatment. In practice you can buy either, or both combined — for example impregnated + heat-oiled, or thermo wood that is also heat-oiled. Always ask: base material, size (e.g. 28×120) and colour.
Why choose heat-oiled boards?
- Ready finish. Boards arrive already toned.
- Deeper protection than surface oil alone. Factory treatment covers all sides.
- UV and moisture help. Oil reduces sun damage and closes fine cracks where water would sit.
- Colour choice. Dark brown, grey, graphite or lighter grey — not only one factory brown.
- Simpler maintenance. After install, a thin maintenance coat is often enough.
Choosing a tone
The sample photo shows how different the same grooved profile can look after heat-oiling. Dark tones suit modern light façades; greys pair with plaster and concrete; warm brown keeps a classic wood feel.

The subframe matters as much as the board
Even the best heat-oiled board fails if the frame is wet, twisted or poorly supported. On real sites you typically see protected joists, joist tape, proper pedestals or gravel for drainage, and often hidden side-fixeners so the walking surface stays screw-free.
Care after installation
Heat-oiled decking is not maintenance-free. Clean in spring, remove moss, and apply a thin oil when the surface starts to dry or fade. See also terrace oiling.
FAQ
Is heat-oiled the same as thermo wood?
Not necessarily. Thermo wood is thermally modified; heat-oiling is an oil process. Ask your supplier which combination you have.
Do I need to oil immediately after install?
Many heat-oiled boards are ready to use. A light top coat can refresh the tone — follow the product guidance.
Grooved or smooth?
Grooved gives better grip when wet; smooth looks more uniform. It is mainly aesthetics and slip resistance.
