Why paving

Why a properly built paved surface lasts for years

The way you arrive at your home matters just as much as the façade. A proper driveway transforms the whole look of the house — before anyone even steps through the door.

The lifespan of a paved surface is decided in what the eye can't see: the base, the drainage and the precision. When the crushed stone, sand and slopes are done right, the surface won't sink or shift even after years and frost heaves. Every project starts with a site visit — we discuss the pattern, the stone colour and the need for edging, and only then set the solution and the price.

Why Puuseppmeister

Three things that set a long-lasting surface apart

Cheap paving and long-lasting paving differ exactly in what stays hidden beneath the stones, out of sight.

Load-bearing crushed-stone base

We excavate, level and compact a crushed-stone base (100–150 mm) that holds the surface in place for years. The clay-rich Harjumaa soil sinks in frost heaves if the base isn't compacted properly.

Correct slope and drainage

The surface is built with a slight fall away from the building so rain and meltwater run off rather than pooling. The right slope keeps the driveway dry and protects the base from frost.

Precise joints and edging

We lay in the chosen pattern, fill the joints and install edging stones that lock the surface at the edge. A proper edge gives a finished look and extends the surface's lifespan.

How the surface comes together

Paving installation step by step

A clear sequence from the first conversation to the finished driveway — each stage depends on the readiness of the previous one, so no settling or gaps appear.

1

Consultation and measurement

We inspect the site, discuss the pattern and stone, and measure the area and edging. We check the condition of the ground — clay soil needs a deeper base.

2

Excavation and base preparation

We remove the organic layer (200–300 mm on clay soil), level the ground and set the slopes for water runoff.

3

Crushed-stone base and compaction

We lay 100–150 mm of crushed stone and compact it layer by layer. This load-bearing base holds the surface in place and prevents settling.

4

Bedding sand

A level 30–50 mm sand layer gives the stones an exact base and an even height — so every stone sits true.

5

Laying the stones in a pattern

We lay the stones in the chosen pattern and constantly check that lines stay straight and joints stay even.

6

Installing the edging stones

We install walkway or driveway edging that locks the surface at the edge and gives a finished look.

7

Jointing and handover

We fill the joints with sand, compact the surface, clean the area and give maintenance advice. Finally we walk the result through together with you.

Technique and requirements

Base layers, slope and frost resistance

On Harjumaa's clay soil, paving has to withstand moisture, frost and load. Load capacity and a long lifespan are born in the base and the slopes — these are the requirements we follow on every site from Tallinn to Harjumaa.

  • Base build-up on clay soil roughly 35–45 cm in total
  • Slope away from the building for water runoff
  • Edging stones lock the surface at the edge and hold the line

The most common mistake

Cheap paving is often laid on a thin or uncompacted base and without a slope. Without a proper crushed-stone base and drainage, the surface sinks in frost heaves within just a couple of years. A properly compacted base and the right slope keep the surface in place for years.

Base layers and depth

On clay soil we remove 200–300 mm of organic layer, lay 100–150 mm of compacted crushed stone and 30–50 mm of bedding sand. In total the base build-up is roughly 35–45 cm.

Slope and drainage

The surface is built with a slight fall away from the building so rain and meltwater run off rather than pooling. The right slope together with the crushed-stone base works as drainage and keeps the surface dry.

Frost resistance on clay soil

The clay-rich Harjumaa soil sinks in frost heaves if the base isn't compacted properly. A compacted crushed-stone base spreads the load and keeps the surface in place through winter.

Edging stones and the edge

Walkway or driveway edging locks the paving at the edge so the stones don't spread apart. It gives a finished look and extends the surface's lifespan.

Does installation need a permit?

For a private-home driveway and yard area, usually no. Near a public area or pavement, approval may be required — we'll help figure it out if needed.
