Bathroom remodel is one of the most important home renovation projects – done properly, it increases your home’s value and gives you a comfortable room for decades. In Tallinn and Harjumaa a professional bathroom remodel follows clear stages from planning to final finish. This article gives a practical overview of each step and what to keep in mind.

1. Planning and measuring

First the bathroom is thoroughly inspected and measured – all wall surfaces, the floor, shower area and pipe locations. It is important to clarify whether you need a full remodel (everything out, new tiles and plumbing) or a partial one (for example only one wall or a new floor). During planning you choose materials – tiles and wall boards – and the order of works so you avoid extra costs and re‑doing work. Accurate measurements allow you to order the right amount of materials and prepare a fair quote.

2. Demolition

The next step is removing old materials – wall and floor tiles, old boards and, if necessary, old grout and adhesive. Demolition must be careful so that the substrate stays as intact as possible. Often hidden problems appear at this stage – moisture damage in walls or leaking old pipes. These must be taken into account before new layers are installed. Proper demolition is the base for waterproofing and tiles that last.

3. Plumbing and electrics

During a remodel it is the best time to check and renew water and drainage pipes and electrical wiring. Old metal pipes may rust or leak; plastic pipes may be cracked or undersized. Pipes and cables are usually renewed before finishing walls and floor so everything is hidden safely inside structures. This step helps avoid future leaks and faults that would be much more expensive to fix later.

4. Waterproofing and substrate

Before tiling, waterproofing is essential. Without it moisture can reach walls and floor and cause mould, cracks and damage to neighbouring rooms. A waterproof board, membrane or liquid coating is installed, especially in the shower area, around pipe penetrations and along floor edges and corners. When this layer is done correctly, tiles and grout can do their job on top.

5. Tiling and floor

When waterproofing is complete, wall and floor tiles are installed. Floor tiles must have the correct slope towards the drain and an anti‑slip surface. After tiling, joints are grouted – grout seals the gaps and gives the surface a clean, hygienic look. Quality materials and careful work largely determine how long the bathroom will last without problems.

6. Finish and handover

In the final step sanitary ware is installed: washbasin, shower or tiled shower area, toilet and, if needed, washing machine. All joints are sealed and connections tested for leaks. Accessories and cabinets are mounted and the site is cleaned thoroughly. After that the bathroom is ready to use.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A full remodel can take from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on scope, materials and schedule. Partial work (for example only one wall or the floor) is usually faster. The exact timetable is agreed after a site visit and quote.
